Terrick Smith hit a 300-member wall in a restrictive franchise. By going independent, rebranding to T50 Fitness, and partnering with CloudFit, he gained total control of his business. Now at 500+ members, his gym is thriving and scaling seamlessly.

Sam here, and this is one of those gym stories that makes you stop and ask, “How did they actually do that?”

T50 Fitness grew from around 300 members to more than 500, rebranded out of a franchise model, opened a second location, and now has a third and fourth on the horizon. That kind of growth does not happen by accident.

So, what changed? What shifted? And what gave Terrick Smith and his team the room to grow?

When Alex and I visited T50 Fitness in Pearland, Houston, we knew we were going to meet a gym owner with a great story. But hearing Terrick talk through the growth of his business made it even more impressive. This is a gym that had been sitting around the 300-member mark for a while, before Terrick made the decision to move away from the franchise model, rebrand as T50 Fitness, and build something that felt more aligned with the way he actually wanted to run his gym.

For any gym owner, that is a huge achievement. Not just because of the member growth itself, but because of what it represents: more control, a stronger brand, better systems, and a business that has been able to grow beyond the limits of where it once was.

The part I loved most about Terrick’s story is that it never felt like he was trying to reinvent himself overnight. He already knew his stuff. Terrick has been in the fitness industry since 1997, and honestly, you can tell within about two minutes of talking to him that this is not just a business to him. Programming, coaching, member experience, building a strong training environment—he takes all of it seriously.

What changed was not his passion or his experience. It was the space to finally bring it all together under his own brand, with his own ideas, in his own way.

The Growth That Made Us Pay Attention

Alright gym owners, lean in here.

This is the part where the numbers start looking very, very impressive, because going from 300 to 500+ members takes serious structural support.

Before T50 became what it is today, Terrick was operating under a former franchise brand. Franchises are brilliant for giving owners a solid foundation and a place to start. However, as an ambitious owner grows, they can sometimes find that rigid franchise structures start to feel like a ceiling, limiting their creativity and local community impact. Over time, the structure no longer matched the business Terrick wanted to build.

"I was with a former brand, was looking to leave because I wanted more control. And they were doing things I didn’t like.”

In fitness, growth is not always blocked by a lack of effort. Often, the coaching is there, the programming is there, and the community is there, but the operational systems around the business are creating friction. At T50, that showed up clearly in the numbers.

"We were hovering around between 300 to 330, going up and down, couldn’t get past that point. But once we switched over to T50 using CloudFit, that’s when we took off. Now we’re above 500 members.”

That is the part gym owners should pay attention to. T50 did not grow because Terrick suddenly became better at fitness. The growth came when the business had more control, a clearer brand, and a technology system that could actually support the way he wanted to deliver the experience. Growth does not always mean reinventing the whole business. Sometimes it means removing the friction around what is already working, so the business can finally move properly.

Walking Into T50, You Feel the Culture Straight Away

The numbers got our attention, but the room sealed it. By the end of our visit, our cheeks were hurting from smiling and our hips from dancing.

The members were warm, welcoming, and genuinely happy to have us there. You could tell pretty quickly that this was not the kind of gym where people walk in, train, and leave without speaking to anyone. There was a real sense of connection in the room, and it felt like people were proud to be part of it.

I know “community” gets said a lot in fitness, but at T50 it actually felt real. People were smiling at each other, encouraging each other, and making us feel included before we had even started training. There was this easy, comfortable energy in the room that you cannot manufacture. It comes from the way a place is led, and the standards that are set every day.

Terrick explained it really simply:

“I was just making sure everyone feels welcome, invited, comfortable, and cared for. It starts at the top, and then the coaches are great. So this is like a domino effect — and a great culture of health to be a part of.”

For gym owners, that is a big reminder. Growth is not just about getting more people through the door. It is about what people feel once they are inside.

Building a Brand That Actually Felt Like His

This is where branding stops being just a logo and starts becoming the whole feel of the business. T50 is what happens when the name, the programming, the people, and the energy all point in the same direction.

For Terrick, moving away from the franchise model was about building the business around his own standards. That is where CloudFit became incredibly useful, because it allowed him to bring his programming to life visually on the floor. Instead of relying on generic corporate content, Terrick could create and upload his own movements, use his own coaches, and make the screen experience feel unapologetically like T50.

“Having the creativity to add our own moves — that’s what I love. Record your staff or yourself as a coach, work on your branding, put yourself on the video. If you’re having a hard time finding exercises or feeling like your exercises are redundant, you create your own.”

Good technology should never make a gym feel generic. It should act as a megaphone for the owner’s programming, coaching style, and unique brand.

The Programming Difference

When you ask Terrick what makes T50 different, he does not hesitate.

“Our workouts are a lot more challenging, a lot more creative, and we change them. Day of, they’re different day to day — but we also change them day of. If I see something I don’t like or somebody gives me feedback, we’ll have a different exercise within that workout, day of. Our workouts are definitely more challenging. No one competes with our workouts.”

That level of flexibility is vital. Terrick is not locked into a fixed programming style. If a movement is not working, he can swap it. With CloudFit, the movements, timing, demos, and structure sit effortlessly inside the session, allowing his team to deliver standard-setting workouts at scale.

Members even send him exercise ideas they have seen online:

“You’ll notice members want to give you tips for exercises they see on TikTok or Instagram — ‘Hey, can you incorporate this?’ And you can. It makes it a really great community feel.”

Screens That Amplify, Not Replace

There is an understandable, lingering fear in the fitness industry that introducing screens or technology means the coaching will become less personal—that human connection will be lost. Terrick is well aware of this misconception.

“I’ve seen some people take shots at gyms that use screens. The screens are not to be used as your only coach. They’re supposed to enhance your coach’s ability and what they already do.”

When Alex and I jumped into a strength and conditioning session, we saw exactly what he meant. The screens ran the session beautifully. They held the structure, showed the exercises, ran the timers, and dictated the flow.

Because CloudFit was managing the logistics, the coaches were completely freed up to be present on the floor. They were not wasting breath explaining what came next; they were correcting technique, giving cues, bringing energy, and actually coaching the room. Good technology does not remove the human part of a gym. When used properly, it gives the human part more space to show up.

Turning Screens Into Revenue Streams

Terrick took CloudFit beyond just a workout display and made it an active part of his business model.

“One of the great things about CloudFit that I wasn’t expecting was, I have a lot of entrepreneurs in my gym, so I’m able to take their business flyers and marketing and put them onto the screens as well. And then another stream of revenue: go out to local businesses, have them send you flyers, pay a monthly fee to be on the screens.”

This is brilliant. He is using the screens to support his coaches, celebrate members, promote local businesses, and create an extra income stream. Strong gym owners make every part of their business work harder.

The Switch to CloudFit

Changing systems and rebranding is a massive move, especially when you have hundreds of members relying on you. But the right tools give you the confidence to take the leap. In Terrick’s own words, this is how he found CloudFit:

“An owner of the former franchise I was with was trying to snitch on another owner who had already switched to CloudFit. But I knew that owner, so I called her up and said, what are you doing? She told me, and then right after that I Googled CloudFit — and the rest is history. Reached out, they responded right away, told me everything, and we were ready to roll in 30 days.”

“When I found CloudFit, that was a game changer. Made me want to switch. I was ready to switch. I had the confidence to switch.”

The Real Proof is in the People

Growth is great, but the magic is what happens inside the four walls of the gym. 500+ members is a big number, but numbers only tell part of the story.

Ashley came to T50 struggling with her fitness. She had gained weight, felt uncomfortable running, and had tried unreliable personal trainers.

“I’ve transformed my body composition, got a lot of discipline, developed really good habits, and got a real good community here. So it’s been great.”

Ashley went on to lose 70 pounds and later became a coach. Then there is Alicia, who lost 72 pounds. Terrick noted that a lot of her progress accelerated after the business transformation:

“A lot of it came once we switched over to T50 using CloudFit,”

Alicia agreed completely:

“That’s when I noticed the difference — when T50 came.”

The rebrand was not just a behind-the-scenes operational shift. The members felt the gym level up.
